Designation Process
State governors can nominate 25% of their respective state’s eligible census tracts every ten years to become Opportunity Zones. In 2026, Indiana will be able to nominate 126 of its 501 eligible census tracts. The 90-day period in which states can nominate census tracts begins on July 1. A list of eligible census tracts can be found here.
The Indiana Office of Commerce, in coordination with other state agencies and the Governor’s Office, will lead the effort to develop a transparent, data-driven process for selecting Indiana’s next cohort of Opportunity Zones. Strong selections will require input from READI regions, mayors, local and regional stakeholders, and the broader public. Indiana will nominate census tracts that demonstrate a high likelihood of impactful investment by leveraging the Opportunity Zone program. More information will be shared about the public input process and selection criteria in the coming months.
Please reach out to OpportunityZones@gov.in.gov if you have additional questions. Indiana’s Office of Commerce will update this page when additional information is available.
