Indiana Nursing Scholarship

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my institution is eligible to offer these scholarships?

All Indiana public or private, non-profit, non-proprietary institutions that offer an accredited, pre-licensure, BSN program are eligible to offer the Indiana Nursing Scholarship for Out-of-State Students. This information is being shared directly with all 29 public and private colleges and universities eligible for these scholarships.

How many scholarships can my institution grant to eligible students?

A minimum of six scholarships will be allocated to each eligible institution. The number of scholarships being offered to each institution is roughly proportionate to the number of BSN students that the institution typically graduates or is expected to graduate.

What is the total scholarship amount?

Each eligible student will receive $1,500 for Semester I and $1,500 for Semester II totaling $3,000 for the 2023–2024 academic year. The funds will be sent directly to the institution upon verification of eligibility and matriculation.

How will the scholarship funds be received?

Before March 30, institutions will identify the number of scholarships they plan to package for incoming students. Then, on September 5, 2023, ICI will collect the names of all matriculants for whom scholarships have been awarded. ICI will then distribute one check to each of the participating institutions in an amount sufficient to cover all eligible matriculants in whose aid package the scholarship has been included. On January 8, 2024, ICI will collect the names again for all scholarship recipients still enrolled in eligible programs. By January 22, 2024, ICI will again distribute one check to each participating institution to cover all in an amount sufficient to cover all eligible matriculants in whose aid package the scholarship has been included.

Why is this scholarship only for out-of-state students?

Indiana currently faces an unprecedented statewide nursing shortage. It has become clear that there is an urgent need to increase the number of graduates from Indiana nursing programs. To support the growing demand, these scholarships are meant to attract out-of-state nursing students to Indiana colleges and universities and retain them in the state post-licensure.

What determines out-of-state residency?

The Indiana State Government via the Indiana Commission for Higher Education defines out-of-state residency as someone who was not a resident of the state of Indiana on or before December 31 of the year preceding the application of admission.

What happens to the scholarships that aren’t packaged by the deadline? Can an institution obtain more than the allotted number of scholarships?

Scholarships that are not packaged by March 30, 2023, will be reverted to the general pool of scholarships, and offered proportionally to institutions that packaged all scholarships. Those institutions will be notified of additional scholarships by April 15, 2023.

Who is the point of contact for scholarship administration at ICI?

Jodie Ferise, JD, vice president and general counsel for ICI, will serve as the point of contact for the administration of the Indiana Nursing Scholarship for Out-of-State Students. You can contact her directly at jferise@icindiana.org or 317-684-4291.
